Osteoporosis is a disease that occurs when bones in the body become too weak and brittle. Simply put, our bones become unable to keep up bone creation. As a result, minor falls, bumps or even a sneeze can cause serious bone breakage.

Anyone can develop osteoporosis. Currently, more than 50 million people in the United States have osteoporosis.

Some factors that can increase your risk of developing this condition are:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Low calcium
  • Smoking
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Celiac disease
  • Hormone levels

Symptoms of osteoporosis can include back pain, fracture of bones, decrease in height and posture change. Most often, patients do not experience any symptoms as osteoporosis can sneak up on you as it develops over time.

If you suspect you may have osteoporosis, speak with your primary care physician. Together, you and your provider will be able to assess the proper course of treatment.
