If you have moderate to severe asthma, you are potentially at a higher risk of becoming extremely ill from COVID-19. Coronavirus can affect your nose, throat, and lungs, which can trigger an asthma attack. These effects of COVID-19 can also lead an asthma patient to develop pneumonia or other respiratory diseases.

Asthma attack versus COVID-19

Indications of an asthma flare-up are dry coughs and shortness of breath that may be accompanied by wheezing due to constricting and/or inflamed airways (lungs). However, symptoms of COVID-19 may include:

  • Fever
  • Loss of taste and smell
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Diarrhea

When you use your rescue inhaler, asthma symptoms should clear up as it’s controlled. However, with COVID-19 your symptoms will not completely resolve as they would for asthma.

If you believe you may have COVID-19, visit one of the conveniently located UofL Health — Urgent Care Plus locations to receive a rapid test for COVID-19. Our locations can also provide asthma services.
