Living with diabetes during the holidays: Be active

Family and dog having fun in the country in winterEven during the busy holiday season, you can find time to fit in exercise. Here are a few tips to help you fit in a few quick workouts.

Have a get together focused around activity. There are several/walks scheduled in the Louisville area in the months of November and December. Have a night out dancing or play active video games with your kids/grandkids.

For most people with diabetes, the recommendation is 30 minutes of physical activity most days out of the week. Remember, it is OK to split this time up so it doesn’t take a big chunk out of your day.

Walk for 10 minutes after each meal.

If it is too cold outside for a walk, find a video on the Internet. An 11 minute cardio chair workout video is available (free) at

Walk the mall before you start your shopping.

Still no time? Try marching in place for three minutes every ½ hour.
