Clinical Genetic Services

Our genetics clinic is dedicated to providing comprehensive medical genetic consultation and services to patients and their families dealing with hereditary conditions and birth defects. Our team consists of medical geneticists, genetic counselors, metabolic nutritionists and a nurse coordinator for the newborn screening program.

Children are evaluated by genetics for a variety of reasons, including birth defects, developmental delay, failure to thrive, or a suspected genetic condition. We also provide long-term follow-up for children with known or suspected genetic conditions.

Medical genetics evaluations are provided to adults with concerns regarding various genetic conditions, including connective tissue disorders, neurological conditions, metabolic disorders, and lysosomal storage disorders.

Genetic counseling is a communication process by which personal genetic risk information is translated into practical information for families. Genetic counselors are able to assist individuals and families by helping people to understand information about birth defects or genetic disorders.  This includes explaining patterns of inheritance, recurrence risks, natural history of diseases, and genetic testing options.  They help families cope with emotional issues related to a diagnosis or testing options, and help them make decisions with which they are comfortable, based on their personal, ethical and religious standards. They also connect individuals and families with appropriate resources, such as support groups or specific types of medical clinics, locally and nationally.

All babies born in Kentucky are tested shortly after birth for at least 29 conditions.  If a result is abnormal or unclear, the recommendation may be to repeat the screen or to have other follow-up testing.  Our genetics team coordinates follow-up confirmatory testing and appropriate specialist appointments for babies with an abnormal newborn screen.

Cytogenetics Laboratory Services

The Cytogenetics Laboratory at the WCEC, which was established in the late 1960s, was the first of its kind in Kentucky.  It was created to perform chromosome analysis (cytogenetic studies) on children who had multiple congenital anomalies (birth defects), developmental delay or intellectual disabilities of undetermined etiology.  In four decades, more than 60,000 tests have been performed and new techniques have been incorporated in the laboratory in order to provide state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures on amniotic fluid, peripheral blood, leukemic blood, tissues, chorionic villi and bone marrow.  Tissues are also cultured for specialized testing to be performed at other laboratories (e.g. cystic fibrosis). The Cytogenetics Laboratory now offers the following:

  • Chromosome Analysis
  • Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis
  • Chromosomal Microarray Analysis (CMA)
