“I grew up in Texas and I’ve been in Louisville now for about 10 years. It is one of the best cities to live in, regardless of your phase of life. When I moved here, I was single – I loved Louisville then – now I’m married with two kids, and it’s a great place to raise a family. Working for UofL Health, you find a family within itself, away from home. This city has a ton to offer as far as different restaurants, activities and things to do outside. Elizabeth Wise, APRN – Neurology

Elizabeth Wise, APRN healthcare provider in Louisville, KY for Neurology, Restorative Neuroscience, Stroke“I am so thankful for this UofL family. It has been part of my life for almost 25 years, first starting as a nurse at UofL Hospital, then transitioning to a nurse practitioner with the Neurology department, where I get to take care of stroke patients across the region. I get to do this because of telemedicine. Telemedicine has been one of the most innovative ways to reach a population that otherwise would not have had a specialist taking care of them. I want to thank my UofL family for allowing me to be part of this journey.”

Adriana Palade, M.D. – Neurology

Adriana E. Palade, M.D. is a healthcare provider in Louisville, KY for Neurology, Epilepsy Center, Restorative Neuroscience, Sleep Medicine

“Five years ago, I came to UofL from another university to help build an epilepsy surgical program. I was attracted by the diversity of the faculty, residents and students, and I find this to be the best way to put our name on the worldwide map. I found amazing opportunities for continuous learning and research, ranging from academic leadership programs to experts studying neurological disorders. I am thrilled to be able to offer state-of-the-art care to our patients, and I feel supported in the decisions I make. My children love the city, and not just because of the big blue skies and green grass, but because they can attend some of the top schools in the country.”

Victor van Berkel, M.D., Ph.D. – Cardiothoracic Surgeon

My family and I have lived here for 10 years. I am a thoracic surgeon and perform surgeries related to lung cancer, lung transplant and esophageal cancer. I came to UofL Health right out of residency to help start the Lung Transplant program. Transplant surgery, lung transplant, in particular, is an important service here in Kentucky. For me, it’s both intellectually and emotionally satisfying. Intellectually, I find the problems associated with lung transplants fascinating. Trying to convince someone’s body to accept another person’s organ as their own is challenging and exciting. It’s very gratifying to help people without other options find an answer to their problems. Having the opportunity to give some of their quality of life back to them is extremely rewarding.

I came to UofL Health because there was and still is a tremendous opportunity to help the people of Kentucky and the surrounding area due to the medically underserved population and tobacco usage rates of the state. UofL Health gives me the opportunity to work with some of the brightest, most curious academic colleagues and doctors who work together to come up with solutions to the most complex problems.  I thoroughly enjoy the people I work with on both the medical and academic side of medicine here at UofL Health.

Our family loves it here too. My wife works as a critical care physician with the anesthesia group at UofL Health and loves her team. Our son attends Collegiate and we live just six minutes from the hospitals in a beautiful neighborhood close to three community parks. Louisville has everything… fine dining, bourbon distilleries and live, local music… not to mention it’s home to the Kentucky Derby. We love living and working here! It’s a big city with a small-town feel!

Sarah Todd, M.D. – Gynecologic Oncologist

As a gynecologic oncologist, I am humbled by the unique privilege to walk alongside women of all ages as they engage, battle, overcome, or, at times, succumb to malignancies of the female genital tract. Even outside of work, I find that I can never quite separate myself from that sensation of being drawn back into the emotional bond that exists between patient and physician over a diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

For some of my patients, the underlying anxiety associated with “the big C” is, thankfully, short-lived and merely a blip in their lives. For many others, unfortunately, their malignancy is all-consuming. My ultimate goal is to better serve my patients in reducing that worry and stress over their particular gynecologic cancers through continued efforts to prolong survival, decrease recurrences, improve methods of detection/screening/prevention, and reduce knowledge gaps. I truly want my patients to not only fight but, more importantly, win the war against cancer.

At the UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center, we strive every day as a team to make this a reality. Louisville is my home through and through. I could not be more fortunate than to have the opportunity to work with a group of people with such inspiring work ethic, attitude, and dedication to patient care.

Emily Sieg, M.D. –Neurosurgeon

“I’ve lived in this city for two years now, and as a native of Pittsburgh, Penn., I am surprised as anyone by how much I love it here. We have all the culture and excitement of the big city, with the hospitality of a small town. It’s easy to get around, there’s minimal traffic, and the people are welcoming. At the same time, we have a restaurant scene that is second-to-none, a parks system that is unparalleled, and arts festivals and culture occurring all the time.”
