Treatments and Services

We are dedicated to the well-being of our patients. We understand your decision to undergo cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is a serious one. Thus we want to be sure to provide you with all of the information you need to make an informed decision. Our staff and surgeons will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the procedure you are contemplating. We will discuss with you what to expect before, during and after your surgery. In this section, you will find brief explanations of various surgical procedures. When you come in for a consult, we will go over these in much more detail and answer any questions you may have.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast. Surgeons insert an implant behind each breast to increase a woman’s bustline by one or more bra cup sizes.

Breast Lift

Pregnancy, nursing and the force of gravity can cause a woman’s breasts to lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breast lift, also called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to temporarily raise and reshape sagging breasts. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.) Mastopexy also can reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. Breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.

Breast Reduction

Women with very large breasts can experience back and neck pain, breathing problems and skin irritation to skeletal deformities. Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can help these women. The procedure removed fat, glandular tissue and skin from breasts making them smaller, tighter and firmer. It also can reduce the size of the areola, which is the darker skin around the nipple. Breast reduction is designed to give a woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion to the rest of her body.

Brow Lift

A forehead lift or “browlift” is a procedure that restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. The procedure corrects sagging brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear angry, sad or tired.

In a forehead lift, the muscles and tissues that cause the furrowing or drooping are removed or changed to smooth the forehead, raise the eyebrows and minimize frown lines.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. However, it produces a permanent scar, which, depending on the extent of the original problem and the surgery required to correct it, can extend from hip to hip.

Liposuction/Liposculpture

Liposuction/liposculpture is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Although no type of liposuction is a substitute for dieting and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods.

Arm Lift

An arm lift, also known as Brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove loose skin and excess fat deposits in the upper arm. With age, upper arm skin can become loose and flabby.

Eyelift

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure to remove fat — usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes,  features that can make you look older and more tired than you feel and may even interfere with your vision. It does not remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes or lift sagging eyebrows.

Facelift

A facelift, also called rhytidectomy, does not stop the aging process but it can slow it. It does so by improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles and redraping the skin of your face and neck. A facelift can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery or nose reshaping.

Nose Shaping

Surgery to reshape the nose also called rhinoplasty, is a very common plastic surgery procedure. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It also may correct a birth defect or injury or help relieve some breathing problems.

Ear Tucks

Ear surgery, also called otoplasty, is usually done to set projecting ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

Usually, the operation is performed on kids ages 4 to 14. Ears are almost fully grown by age four. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient.

Botox®

Botox® is a non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, Botox blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Skin Lesion Excision

Plastic surgeons often are called upon to evaluate suspicious skin lesions. Lesions that should be evaluated and possibly biopsied are those that have irregular borders, variable color, have ulcerated, bleed or have become enlarged. Plastic surgeons usually are known for their ability to close these wounds with tissue rearrangement and flaps to hide the scars and minimize disfigurement after excision of these skin lesions.

Thigh Lift

A thigh lift involves removing the excess skin and fat in the thigh through various incisions depending on the location and severity of the excess. Usually, the scars can be hidden in the upper medial aspect of the thigh along the lower edge of the groin. Candidates for this often are patients that have experienced major weight loss from dieting or bariatric surgery.

Facial Rejuvenation

There are several different options for patients to rejuvenate their faces. Often our patients would like to look younger or rested. Less invasive options to correct wrinkles that result from facial expression and moving the facial muscles include Botox® injections to temporarily paralyze the muscles that create these wrinkles. If a patient has wrinkles at rest, this can be improved with fillers using Restylane® or Juvederm®. When patients have more extensive wrinkling in the eyes or face, lift procedures can be done where the excess skin is removed through an incision placed in areas that are hidden. Some of these procedures have been appropriately called eyelifts, facelifts, brow lifts and neck lifts.

Skincare/Facial Peels

Other procedures that we perform to rejuvenate the face include chemical peels (such as with OBAGI®, phenol, TCA or glycolic acid) and dermabrasion. We offer a full line of skincare products. We also perform medical tattooing for permanent make-up.

Body Contouring

Sometimes as we age, we accumulate fat or excess skin in unwanted areas such as the abdomen or thigh. Also, this tissue excess can occur after major weight loss. Our plastic surgery team has become the major referral center for complex body contouring after weight loss and bariatric surgery. This improvement in body contouring can be achieved with liposuction or direct excision of excess skin or fat with arm and thigh lift procedures or tummy tucks.

Reconstruction

Major advances in the field of microsurgery and reconstruction have been pioneered at UofL Physicians –  Plastic Surgery over the past three decades. We are responsible for training future plastic surgeons on the principles of wound closure after cancer resection and traumatic injuries. Usually, the wounds that are referred to us are complex and require flaps of skin, fat, muscle or bone based on small vessels that sometimes require repair with a microscope. If you have been referred to UofL Physicians -- Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for a complex wound, you should feel comfortable that you are at one of the most prestigious plastic surgery programs in the country with a reputation for excellence in the treatment of complex wound reconstruction.

Hand and Wrist Surgery

Several of our plastic surgeons have had significant training in the field of hand surgery. One aspect of a Resident Training Program is to ensure that the experience is diverse and provides them with exposure to hand surgery so that plastic surgeons can help patients with hand injuries in their community when they graduate and go into practice. At UofL Physicians – Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we are required to teach our residents hand surgery so we perform carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, arthroplasty for painful thumb arthritis, treat hand and wrist fractures, hand and wrist ligament injuries, flexor and extensor tendon injuries, nerve injuries and replant amputations.
