Child Neurology

At UofL Physicians - Child Neurology, we understand that when a child has a neurologic condition such as seizures, a tumor or a neuromuscular disorder, it can be very scary. That is why we are committed to providing excellent, timely care to every child with a neurological problem throughout Kentucky and the surrounding areas. We work with our young patients and their families to educate them about their disorder and provide them with ongoing care and support.

Located in Louisville, UofL Physicians - Child Neurology provides expert evaluation and management of childhood neurologic disorders, including brain and spinal cord diseases, seizures, strokes, tumors, neuromuscular disorders, sleep disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and other genetic and non-genetic conditions involving the nervous system

Each year, our board-certified world-class experts provide care for approximately 10,000 patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. UofL Physicians - Child Neurology is very committed to education on various levels through clinical research, teaching at the UofL School of Medicine and serving our community. Through clinical research our physicians learn about new and effective treatments in the field.  Currently, we have studies that focus on new or unstudied treatments for epilepsy, migraine headaches, spasticity, Tourette Syndrome and other neurological conditions that affect children. Our physicians work daily mentoring medical students and residents with the School of Medicine while also making time to give lectures for the various departments.  We do all of this because we are committed to educating our community about children’s neurological conditions.

Our multidisciplinary team offers state-of-the art care for a wide range of pediatric neurological conditions, including brain and spinal cord diseases, seizures, strokes, tumors, neuromuscular disorders, sleep disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and other genetic and non-genetic conditions involving the nervous system. As sub-specialists, we focus our expertise on specific aspects of child neurology to give our patients the best care possible.

Specialists board-certified in pediatrics and neurology work in partnership with a number of other pediatric specialists to treat a wide range of nervous system diseases and disorders in children. These include but are not limited to:

This clinic specializes in treating children who have neurological conditions caused from an established genetic basis. Epilepsy, muscular dystrophies, and intellectual disability are just a few of the conditions that we treat.

Stroke Clinic

It is very rare for a child or infant to have a stroke, but it can happen.  Sometimes, it can even happen before the infant is born. Children who suffer from strokes need special care. Our Stroke Clinic treats children who have suffered from strokes.

The Louisville Spasticity Clinic

Children who are seen in The Louisville Spasticity Clinic generally have an increase muscle tone and stiffness following injury to brain or spinal cord. This will cause the child to have stiff or tight muscles and have a hard time with movement, speaking, and walking. This clinic is just a part of the patient’s care and is an opportunity for the doctors and therapists to work together to develop a plan of treatment for our patients. Clinic visits do not replace regular visits with the doctors or therapists.

The Louisville Cerebral Palsy Clinic

This clinic focuses on treating children who have Cerebral Palsy, which is a condition that includes several types of disorders that affect the brain and nervous system.

Louisville Neuro Oncology Clinic

This clinic specializes in treating children who have cancer or tumors of the central nervous system, neuromuscular junction and spine.

Tuberous Sclerosis (TS) is a very rare, genetic disorder that has many symptoms. This disease causes tumors on the brain and other organs and may cause seizures and developmental delays.

Movement Disorders/Tourette Syndrome Clinic

Movement disorders are characterized by some uncontrollable movement of the body.  This clinic focuses on children with tics, tremors and other movement disorders such as Tourette Syndrome.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumor (usually benign) growth on nerves.  This clinic treats children diagnosed with the various forms of NF.

New Onset Seizure Clinic

The New Onset Seizure (NOS) clinics were established to meet the growing demand of children in the region with a new onset of various seizure disorders.  Several of the Child Neurology doctors and nurse practitioners have NOS clinics each month.
